The UPL opened in Fall 2021 primarily as an alternative testing location for high-challenge courses. Since then, we’ve expanded to providing many other testing services. While our primary goal is to provide a quality testing experience to UNCG students, we also offer some fee-based proctoring for non-UNCG classes, and some standardized testing (CLEP, GRE, TEOFL, PRAXIS, and others). We also now offer makeup exam proctoring by request, and we have partnered with the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) to provide some accommodated testing for students with disabilities.

Mission and Vision

The UPL provides professional test proctoring that:

  • Supports students in reaching their test taking potential,
  • Provides a secure, quiet, and clean testing environment, and
  • Offers support from knowledgeable, courteous test proctoring staff.

We are committed to maintaining professional testing practices, minimizing technological barriers to test taking, safeguarding confidentiality of student records, and helping build trust in the testing process for both faculty and students.

How does the UPL support Academic Integrity?

The University Proctoring Lab is committed to following the university’s mission and ensuring that academic integrity and honesty is paramount.

According to UNCG policy, Academic Dishonesty includes:

  • Unauthorized copying from another student,
  • Using notes, books, and/or other information in tests/quizzes, except as expressly permitted,
  • Obtaining or retaining partial or whole copies of assessments before they are distributed for student use,
  • Obtaining confidential information about assessments not released by the instructor,
  • Securing, giving, or exchanging, information or assistance during examinations and other academic exercises, except as expressly permitted,
  • Presenting data or other material gathered by another person as one’s own,
  • Having another person take one’s place for any academic performance,
  • Purchasing an assignment from an online site or online platform,
  • Obtaining assistance from someone else that goes beyond mere editing, and/or
  • Participating in unauthorized discussion group or answer-sharing on any online platform.

Monitoring for Academic Integrity within the UPL includes the following measures:

  • Proctors confirm the identity of each test taker via a state- or university-issued photo identification card.
  • Hats, hoods, and oversized coats are not allowed into the UPL, except for religious observance.
  • The use of electronics is not permitted during the exam, except for medical devices.
  • Proctors inspect any faculty-approved test items to look for signs of tampering.
  • Proctors distribute and collect UPL-owned headphones, calculators, pencils/pens and scratch paper for student use.
  • Upon completion of exam session, proctors collect and secure any materials used during the exam.
  • Proctors use software to observe the screens of all test takers and conduct walk-throughs of the lab every 5-7 minutes while testing is in progress.

In case of suspected Academic Dishonesty during a proctored exam, UPL staff are required to report any suspicions to the faculty member. The proctor will let the student complete the exam and notify the instructor immediately after the exam is completed, including providing a detailed account of suspicious activity, and any evidence collected during the testing appointment.
